ACTU: Overview Welcome to the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the most critical health issue facing our nation today. The number of people affected by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus, the virus that causes AIDS) continues to grow. People with HIV and the medical professionals who serve them are seeking answers to the many questions about HIV/AIDS. Since 1987, the Washington University ACTU has been
a highly productive participant in the AIDS Clinical Trials Group funded
by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. It conducts
clinical research trials of potential treatments for HIV and its complications.
Centrally located in the Midwest, the Washington University ACTU draws
participants from Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Kansas, Tennessee, Nebraska
and Oklahoma. With close ties to the Division of Infectious Diseases at
Washington University School Well established in the community, the Washington University ACTU provides access to research trials, community outreach and education, continuing education and consultation for health care professionals. Since 1988, the Washington University ACTU has screened approximately 4200 HIV-infected individuals for possible participation in clinical trials. As of December 1, 2006, 1800 volunteers have participated in studies offered at our site.
